What to buy is a real challenge and by sharing my recent experience, I hope that such may assist you with your journey. The following are my views, and you will develop your own ... which is an exciting journey along the roller derby path.

Helmet

I chose the "Triple 8 Brainsaver Helmet with sweatsaver liner, gloss pink" because it is certified for roller derby, and bicycle riding ... so it must be good. The sweatsaver is attached with velcro and easily detaches for a quick wash under the tap if needed. I am very happy with this product and am in the process of decorating it :D

Mouthguard

I am planning on buying a new mouth guard and will then update this section.

Elbow pads

These elbow pads by Atom are the best for me. I like that they do what they are designed to do ... protect my elbows, and they do not restrict movement of my elbows. This is very important for me.

Wrist pads

These wrist pads by K2 are easily the best designed and most fuctional of all that I tried on. An excellent product.

Knee pads

These knee pads by Atom are fitted, so you need to slide your leg in ... this design is the best because they won't move or fall down, which is critically important and then strapping them up makes them absolutely secure.

There is no better knee pad that I tested.

Roller derby skates

The most important consideration for me with my roller derby skates, is how well the boot feels on my foot. This is the first and foremost consideration. If the boot does not seem to be right, then find one that does.

I swapped the wheels out for Atom Poisons 62x38 mm, and they are a brilliant wheel ... grippy, which means that you won't slip or slide easily with these, which is exactly what I needed when I first started derby training.

TIP - to help your derby skates dry out, place the boot tongue through the laces as in my foto below. :)

Freshmeat final thoughts

I did my research, set a budget, and then exchanged some emails with a derby (skate) shop that was recommended to me by a Derby League that I hope to join.

The derby shop employs staff that actually play derby, and this is essential I think, for someone wanting the best possible assistance with what to buy.

I think it is absolutely essential to try on derby gear in shop ... ask questions, take your time, and buy what is right for you.

I have a fair ways to travel on public transport ... yuck haha ... and so I buy a few hundred dollars worth at a time. I love roller derby and this works for me. For someone who is less sure, a freshmeat package is well worth considering, affordable skates and pads priced together.

ALWAYS leave your derby pads, skates, helmet to dry after use. I leave mine on my balcony to dry. :)

Having the top of the range derby gear doesn't make a gurl the best player ... gear can only help. The best derby players in my view are those who do their best as part of the team ... and so you just need the very basics of gear to do that.

No one cares what gear a gurl has ... they care whether she is a team player and tries !!! (I used to skate for fun ... on op shop $10.00 skates with only 7 of the 8 wheels that were fuctional !!!) Who you are as a person is what really matters ... buy the gear you can afford and join in the roller derby fun !!!

As a final word, I want to talk about something derby related, that being a backpack. If you want a backpack for your gear, then the Cado Motus "falling motion of the body" is worth considering. A roller derby shop here in Melbourne sells them, and I love this backpack. I will use it for events in addition to roller derby.

In the fotos below you can see how I choose to attach my derby skates.

Well I hope this article has been useful to you and if you have any comments or questions, feel welcome to message me (womyn only).

The furry green love heart and WFTDA patch are NOT part of the backpack ... it is just me starting to decorate it! :D

I line up my derby skates as in the above foto, and then attach them, as per the foto below.
